Innovating for Sustainability and Scalability
“Have a good product and the customers will come.” – This business approach might have worked a long time ago when choices were scarce but, in the current market where competition is rife and consumers have an array of options, businesses have to work a lot harder. Not only do they need to innovatively present their products and services, they need to position themselves in a way that resonates with customers. Clearly, today’s consumers have exacting standards and know what they want, and businesses that hope to attract their custom will need to level up.
While businesses may recognise the need to differentiate themselves, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often do not have the resources nor expertise to analyse trends, design clever marketing campaigns, establish a compelling brand positioning or address other critical business issues. In this eBulletin, we share how two SMEs took definitive steps towards innovating for the future in spite of their lean resources. Through the UOB-SMU Asian Enterprise Institute’s flagship SME Consulting Programme (SCP), Wilsafe Systems Pte Ltd underwent a brand audit and received practical strategies to increase its impact among its target audience; Comoclub Pte Ltd, after a customer journey evaluation, obtained recommendations on optimising the customer journey, to enhance its member privilege programme.
In each case, the SCP project was managed by a team of student-consultants under the supervision of an industry veteran as Project Advisor and a Project Manager from the Institute. Working closely with the SME, the consulting team discerned the business issues, leveraged scientific methodologies to conduct the research, and proposed feasible, practical solutions that addressed the problems.
